Kyrgyzstan propels regional energy development with Kambarata HPP-1 project at TIIF-2024

At the forefront of Central Asia’s energy evolution, Kyrgyzstan seized the spotlight at the III Tashkent International Investment Forum with a compelling presentation on the Kambarata HPP-1 project. The event focused on energy initiatives, saw the unveiling of not only Kambarata HPP-1 but also insights into the Chatkal HPP and Kyrgyzstan’s vast energy potential.

Led by Akylbek Zhaparov, Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers – Head of the Administration of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, and Abdulla Aripov, Prime Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the forum drew attention from international organizations and financial institutions alike.

Zhaparov’s address outlined Kyrgyzstan’s robust energy potential, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to green energy.

“In Kyrgyzstan, almost all energy generated is ‘green,’ as it comes from hydropower,” stated Zhaparov, highlighting that only a fraction of the country’s energy potential has been harnessed thus far.

With global green energy trends in mind, Kyrgyzstan is accelerating its infrastructure energy projects, with Kambarata HPP-1 emerging as a strategic focal point.

A milestone was marked as Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan inked a roadmap for the Kambarata HPP-1 construction. The project, anticipated to boast a total design capacity of 1860 MW, is projected to yield 5.6 bn kWh of electricity annually, underscoring its regional significance.

The forum also shed light on other energy endeavors, including the Chatkal River hydroelectric power station project. Zhaparov underscored the pivotal role of foreign investment in advancing Kyrgyzstan’s energy sector, inviting global companies to engage in projects ranging from small to medium-sized hydroelectric power stations to renewable energy sources.

Zhaparov emphasized the prioritization of the energy industry, designating Kambarata HPP-1, the Kazarman hydroelectric power station cascade, and the Kemin-Torugart power transmission line as “national” projects.

To facilitate engagement, the Ministry of Energy of the Kyrgyz Republic orchestrated an information platform showcasing the country’s energy projects and potential. With participants from 93 countries, including government agencies, international organizations, and financial institutions, the forum served as a catalyst for collaboration in Central Asia’s energy landscape.
