I’ve found the most deserted ski slopes in Europe

The following morning, after a large breakfast, we were collected at the jetty by a smart motorboat waiting to whisk us across the water. 62 Nord is keen for guests to explore the concept of “friluftsliv,” a Norwegian philosophy of enjoying a simple life in nature without causing disturbance. Luckily, the region’s alpine terrain and more than 100 jagged peaks are best accessed from the water; small hamlets and lone farms dotted around the fjords with wooden pontoons jutting into the quiet waters providing perfect landing spots.

We cruised along Hjørundfjorden, 3,280ft-high cliffs looming above dark, clear waters before diverting to the roadless village of Trandal. The tiny hamlet – with a population of approximately seven – is renowned on social media as the location of the most beautiful swing in the world. I was surprised when, for the first time ever, reality trounced Instagram; this remote, rope-and-plank swing suspended from a tall pine beat any expectation.

On to Maudekollen, and while, after three hours of climbing slowly upward the sea eagle set the backdrop of our celebratory summit photograph, the ski down was heavy. I’ve experienced incredible powder on previous trips to Norway, but thanks to the unusual warmth of this particular March day (temperatures reflected across Europe last season) the snow weighed down my skis. It barely mattered though, after the exhilarating experience of the day and my newly-adopted “friluftsliv” outlook.

Back on board and reunited with the rest of the group, who had ventured up a beginner-friendly 1,970ft climb on specially-prepared slopes near the village of Leira, our skipper whisked us to the grand old Hotel Union Øye (each boat trip took around an hour). A property rich in history, it is the ideal place to replenish energy levels after a day on the mountains. Øye was refurbished and sympathetically extended in 2022, with a carefully prepared menu of cocktails and food laced with locally foraged herbs, mushrooms and fish to end a dream day by the fjords.
