Will Minnesota be a battleground state in 2024?
Minnesota hasn’t elected a Republican for president in decades, but low party support and close margins means the state could be in play for Trump.
MINNEAPOLIS — Wednesday, President Joe Biden nominated assistant U.S. attorney Laura Provinzino to serve as Minnesota’s next federal judge.
The St. Cloud native was recommended by Minnesota Democratic Senators Tina Smith and Amy Klobuchar to serve on the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota.

“As a widely respected assistant United States attorney with over twenty years of legal experience, Laura Provinzino is extremely qualified to serve as a U.S. District Court Judge,” Klobuchar said in a press statement.
The current assistant U.S. attorney has a history of prosecuting violent crimes and has won awards for her work in prosecuting sex trafficking, notably the 2023 sex trafficking case against Anton Lazzaro, former Minnesota GOP donor.
“Born and raised in St. Cloud, she is dedicated to serving all Minnesotans and has a demonstrated commitment to justice and the rule of law,” Klobuchar said.
A 1994 graduate of St. Cloud Technical High School, Provinzino later graduated from Lewis and Clark College in 1998 and Oxford University, as a Rhodes Scholar, in 2000. She earned her law degree from Yale Law School in 2002.
In addition, Provinzino served as a legislative intern for Paul Wellstone and became an assistant U.S. attorney in Minneapolis. She also served as a law clerk to the Honorable Diana Murphy on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit from 2003 to 2004.
Provinzino’s mother taught at Apollo High School, and her father was a lawyer in St. Cloud.
“Laura Provinzino has spent her career serving Minnesotans, advancing justice and protecting the rule of law,” said Smith in a press statement. “She will make an exceptional U.S. District Court Judge, and I want to congratulate her on her nomination.”
After confirmation from the U.S. Senate, Provinzino would replace retired Judge Wilhelmina Wright.
