U.S. Open live golf scores, results, highlights from Friday’s Round 2 leaderboard

Source link : https://earth-news.info/sports/u-s-open-live-golf-scores-results-highlights-from-fridays-round-2-leaderboard/

Last year’s U.S. Open saw the unheralded Wyndham Clark rise to the first major championship of his career. Could another golfer break through at Pinehurst Resort this week?

After Round 1 at Pinehurst, it’s a mix of familiar faces and unlikely leaders atop the leaderboard. The first 18 holes proved to be much more difficult than last year’s event at Los Angeles Country Club, keeping golfers honest to start the major.

Patrick Cantlay and Rory McIlroy sit in a tie for first place, as both are at 5-under after Thursday’s action. Cantlay shot six birdies and a bogey to put up one of the best scores of the day. McIlroy followed a bogey-free round, securing five birdies to put himself in great position for Friday.

Right behind the two is Ludvig Aberg at 4-under. The Swede had six birdies, but also shot two bogeys to end Thursday in third place. Mathieu Pavon and Bryson DeChambeau are tied for fourth at 3-under.

The Sporting News is tracking all the scores and highlights from Round 2 of the U.S. Open on Friday. Follow along with updates and the leaderboard below.

U.S. Open live updates, highlights from Friday’s Round 2

(All times Eastern)

12:07.m. — Scottie Scheffler is on cut watch after double-bogeying No. 5. He’s now 5-over, with the projected line at 3-over.

11:45 a.m. — DeChambeau sinks an impressive putt to move within one stroke of the lead.

11:25 a.m. — Rising up the leaderboard are Xander Schauffele and Taylor Pendrith, with Pendrith’s birdie at No. 1 moving him to 4-under for the day. Both are two strokes off the lead.

10:30 a.m. — Thomas Detry birdies three consecutive holes to skyrocket into contention, but a bogey on No. 14 moves him back to two shots off the lead.

9:50 a.m. — McIlroy chips in to save par on the 17th hole. Huge shot to avoid a third bogey.

Classic one-putt by Rory. 😂 pic.twitter.com/QszrIci7De

9:37 a.m. — Great putt by Bryson DeChambeau on the sixth hole to secure the first birdie for any golfer at the No. 6 today. He rockets up to a tie for No. 3.

9:20 a.m. — Taylor Pendrith rolls in an impressive 52-foot putt on the 11th hole to claim an early birdie. He moves up to a tie for 16th at even par for the tournament.

8:52 a.m. — McIlroy saves par on the 13th hole to stay just 1 over on Friday.

8:34 a.m. — Tom Kim is heating up as he sinks a birdie putt, his second consecutive birdie, on the fourth hole. He’s now 1 under for the day and has moved up 18 spots to a tie for 16th.

8:17 a.m. — McIlroy misses the putt for par, and he’ll have to settle for his first bogey or worse of the week.

8:14 a.m. — Solid shot by McIlroy that nearly rolls into the hole. It carried a few extra feet past the hole, but it should still be a makeable putt for him for par.

8:09 a.m. — McIlroy went an even par to start his second round, but the next hole is causing him some trouble. He hooks a wedge shot left and it bounces off the green and rolls off the side.

U.S. Open live updates, highlights from Thursday’s Round 1

(All times Eastern)

7:20 p.m. — A bogey on No. 7 drops Bryson DeChambeau to 3-under and out of third place, but a strong showing out of the LIV Golf pro to start the U.S. Open.

7:15 p.m. — Rory McIlroy secures a birdie on No. 18 and now there’s company at the top. He’s tied for first place now with Patrick Cantlay at 5-under.

6:35 p.m. — As the day nears an end, there are only 16 players under par compared to 117 over par. Pinehurst No. 2 is proving to be massively different than Valhalla was a month ago, and it’s safe to say there won’t be a 20-under winner this week.

6:32 p.m. — McIlroy birdies his final hole to move into a share of the lead! He’s 5-under and will roll into Friday with all eyes on him as he seeks his first major win in a decade this weekend.

6:25 p.m. — Cantlay remains in front, but Aberg, McIlroy and DeChambeau are now just one stroke off the lead with McIlroy and DeChambeau still finishing up their rounds. As expected, it’s a tight leaderboard at a tough course.

5:58 p.m. — Down to 4-under goes DeChambeau…

5:05 p.m. — Checking in with a few other notables: Scheffler remains 1-over and hasn’t had quite the day he was expecting, while Phil Mickelson finished 9-over earlier in the day. Justin Thomas (+7) and Will Zalatoris (+5) have struggled as well, both behind Tiger Woods. Patrick Cantlay remains the sole leader.

4:45 p.m. — Here comes Bryson! Bryson DeChambeau has enjoyed a bogey-free day through 12 holes, and he’s now tied for third at 3-under.

4:35 p.m. — McIlroy continues to provide the best highlights of the day, and he’s holding steady at 3-under now.

Don’t see Rory go with the low bullet on this side of the pond too often 👀

3:50 p.m. — Here’s the stellar shot that helped propel Tyrrell Hatton to 2-under.

Pretty good shot, if we’re being honest. 😏@TyrrellHatton now 2 under and T-4. pic.twitter.com/sNmPTocoxp

— U.S. Open (@usopengolf) June 13, 2024

3:15 p.m. — This was not the start Scottie Scheffler was looking for, with two bogeys through six holes, but a birdie at No. 7 brings him back closer to the pack.

— U.S. Open (@usopengolf) June 13, 2024

2:53 p.m. — Rory! Back-to-back birdies have McIlroy sitting 2-under through five.

— U.S. Open (@usopengolf) June 13, 2024

2:45 p.m. — Leaderboard check: Only four players are 2-under on the day, but another 17 are 1-under and knocking on the door. Let’s see who can vault themselves into contention.

2:30 p.m. — What a shot from Rory McIlroy four holes into his round. He’s 1-under, which is enough to be tied for fifth considering the way the course has been playing.

— U.S. Open (@usopengolf) June 13, 2024

1:44 p.m. — Tiger Woods finished his first round 4-over par. Meanwhile, Scottie Scheffler sinks par on his first hole of the tournament.

1:40 p.m. — An unheralded Greyson Sigg has opened his day with two birdies over his first three holes. He’s one of six players sitting 2-under or better at this point.

1:25 p.m. — How about Willie Mack III? He birdies No. 5 and is the fifth player to slide to 2-under or better.

— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) June 13, 2024

1:20 p.m. — There are only four players shooting 2-under or better at this point as the course continues to play tough. Patrick Cantlay is in front at 5-under.

1:15 p.m. — PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele has teed off for the first time as a major champion.

12:32 p.m. — Also making waves is amateur Neal Shipley, who birdied at No. 10 and No. 12 to move to 2-under.

12:28 p.m. — Patrick Cantlay surges to a share of the lead with back-to-back birdies. He has five birdies on the day.

11:50 a.m. — Tiger Woods slid considerably on the first four holes of his back nine (which is the course’s front nine), but a birdie at No. 5 is a nice turnaround for him.

— Fore Play (@ForePlayPod) June 13, 2024

11:38 a.m. — Pavon slides back to 4-under after a bogey at No. 11, but a pair of eagles are keeping him in front of the leaderboard.

11:22 a.m. — Wow, Pavon picks up his second eagle of the day by shooting a three on No. 10. He’s scorching hot at 5-under.

— GOLF.com (@GOLF_com) June 13, 2024

10:35 a.m. — The course is playing very tough, as expected, but Koepka and Pavon each just birdied to move to 3-under par and a share of the lead.

9:49 a.m. — Matthieu Pavon is the latest to post an eagle on the Par 5 fifth hole. He moves into a tie for first place with Brooks Koepka. Logan McAllister remains up there as well, but he is set to drop at least one shot on his latest hole.

9:48 a.m. — Tiger Woods has dropped back-to-back shots to move to 1 over. His good start has now been erased.

9:41 a.m. — Brooks Koepka loves playing in golf’s majors, and he’s off to a fast start at Pinehurst. He’s 2 under for the tournament and tied atop the leaderboard with Logan McAllister.

Collin Morikawa very nearly joined them, but he missed an easy birdie putt to stay at 1 under.

9:34 a.m. — Logan McAllister is back atop the tournament. He has played 10 holes thus far and is 2 under par. That positions him well at a difficult course that will only get tougher as time goes along.

9:23 a.m. — Ludvig Aberg is no longer in the lead. He drops a shot on his fifth hole of the day, and that puts 15 players into a tie for first place at 1 under.

9:10 a.m. — Russell Henley is off to a solid start. He made a 38-foot putt to get to 1-under par for the tournament, just one shot off the lead.

— U.S. Open (@usopengolf) June 13, 2024

9:01 a.m. — Tiger Woods just missed another birdie that would have tied him with Ludvig Aberg for the lead. It just misses the edge of the cup, but he gets a tap-in par to stay 1 under.

8:53 a.m. — Players continue to take advantage of the fifth hole during the U.S. Open’s first round. Corey Conners just scratched back to even par with an eagle, the third of the day on the hole, which is presently playing as Pinehurst’s easiest.

There aren’t a ton of gettable holes at Pinehurst No. 2, but the 5th is certainly one of them so far!@coreconn with the third eagle 🦅 of the morning on the par 5. pic.twitter.com/GwPAao0S12

— U.S. Open (@usopengolf) June 13, 2024

8:49 a.m. — Ludvig Aberg has moved his way to the top of the leaderboard. The Swede drains a long birdie putt on the third hole to move to two under, with birdies on back-to-back holes.

— U.S. Open (@usopengolf) June 13, 2024

8:44 a.m. — Tiger Woods continues to play well early. He is making mid-range putts and just had da nice par save on the 13th hole, his fourth of the day. He remains at 1 under and tied for second.

8:41 a.m. — In case anyone is wondering exactly how difficult the Pinehurst greens are, check out Sungjae Im’s excellent approach shot that dripped off the green an into a bunker.

The difference between a birdie putt and a bunker shot is merely a matter of inches at Pinehurst No. 2. pic.twitter.com/yQfeKh0nlp

— U.S. Open (@usopengolf) June 13, 2024

These greens are fast, firm and will only get more difficult as the week continues.

8:35 a.m. — Patrick Cantlay was short-sided in the bunker on the 11th hole early in his round. He found a way to get it up, out and in for his first birdie fo the day.

— U.S. Open (@usopengolf) June 13, 2024

8:27 a.m. — Frederik Kjettrup just drained an eagle putt to go from 1 over to 1 under for the day. The Danish golfer is now in the large group tied for second place at Pinehurst.

The eagle has landed on No. 5… again! 🦅@KjettrupF matches Logan McAllister with a 3 on the par 5. pic.twitter.com/0xtzfeWBZy

— U.S. Open (@usopengolf) June 13, 2024

8:18 a.m. — Parker Bell had the first birdie at the U.S. Open, by the way. The Florida product led the tournament early on but has since dropped to 1 over for the tournament.

Still, as the U.S. Open’s X account (formerly Twitter) noted, the amateur will always be able to say he led the U.S. Open!

No matter what happens in Parker Bell’s golf career, he can always say he led the U.S. Open!

8:15 a.m. — How about Logan McAllister’s start at Pinehurst? He found himself out of position in the rough at the Par-5 fifth, yet he nailed his approach shot and landed it a few feet from the hole. He eagles the hole to take an early lead at 2 under.

— U.S. Open (@usopengolf) June 13, 2024

8:09 a.m. — Tiger Woods is off to a solid start at the U.S. Open. He birdied his first hole and made par on his second to card an early 1-under score. That has him in a seven-way tie for second place as the day begins at Pinehurst.
