It was a start to forget for Fabian Schar during Switzerland’s second group game of Euro 2024, with the Newcastle United centre-back.

Less than 13 minutes into his Group A clash with Scotland on Wednesday night, the defender hung out a leg and deflected Scott McTominay’s shot past Yann Sommer – who looked to have it covered – to give the Scots a 1-0 lead.

UEFA have credited it as an own goal, as things stand, presumably because Schar’s intervention was significant enough to divert a shot Sommer looked set to save into the top corner. Watch it below:

It was a ropey start from Schar, who was partially at fault for the goal and conceded a few cheap free kicks early on, but the Swiss are back level at the time of writing after Xherdan Shaqiri’s first-half equaliser.

As things stand, the Swiss would join Germany in the last 16 with a win after beating Hungary 3-1 in their opening game, while Scotland are in desperate need of three points after they were battered 5-1 by the Germans in their opening game.
