Key Dates and Events Leading to the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election
The recent political turmoil in France following the defeat of President Emmanual Macron’s party will not impact the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris, according to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
With just over five months remaining, U.S. voters are gearing up for the November 5 election to choose their next president. The race is fierce, with Democratic incumbent Joe Biden and Republican frontrunner and former president Donald Trump set to be the primary contenders.
Summer 2024
June 27th: The first of two debates between Biden and Trump will take place in CNN’s Atlanta studio, moderated by anchors Jake Tapper and Dana Bash. This debate, without a live audience, was agreed upon by the candidates in May, bypassing the usual debate schedule set by the Committee on Presidential Debates.
July 11th: Trump faces sentencing in his Manhattan hush money trial after being found guilty on 34 criminal counts related to concealing payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election, making him the first sitting or former U.S. president with a criminal conviction.
July 15-18: The Republican National Convention is scheduled to start in Milwaukee, where official candidate nominations will be announced.
Late July or August: Vice President Kamala Harris has agreed to debate Trump’s yet-to-be-disclosed VP pick on CBS. Trump is set for a vice presidential debate on Fox but has not confirmed if his running mate will engage with Harris on CBS. The Democrats are also expected to conduct a virtual roll call to nominate Biden before Ohio’s electoral ballot certification deadline on August 7.
August 19-22: The Democratic National Convention will be held in Chicago, formally nominating candidates, including Biden.
Fall 2024
September 10: The final presidential debate of the year between Biden and Trump will be hosted by ABC.
November 5: Election Day arrives, with results possibly taking days to finalize, especially if mail-in ballots play a significant role.
January 2025
January 6: Congress will meet in a joint session, overseen by the Vice President, to count the Electoral College votes and declare the winner of the election. This date holds significance following the violent events of January 6, 2021, when the U.S. Capitol was breached in an attempt to stop the vote count.
Congress has responded by passing the Electoral Count Reform and Presidential Transition Improvement Act of 2022, establishing a higher threshold to challenge state election results.
January 20: The inauguration of the newly elected president and vice president will take place, marking the official transition of power.
