Authorities in Mozambique have banned the importation of dog breeds deemed to be dangerous. This is coming due to the rise in attacks by wild dogs.

The ban affects 26 breeds, including Rottweilers, Boerboels, bull terriers, pit bulls, bullmastiffs, and German Shepherds.

In Mozambique, an average of 18,000 cases of animal bites and 20 suspected human deaths are reported every year. Dog bites are common in Mozambique. Last year, dog bites accounted for more than half of the cases recorded.

The decision by the country’s Ministry of Agriculture is aimed at combatting the numerous dog attacks recorded all over the Southern African country. Some of the dog attacks have ended in serious wounds, amputations, and even death.

However, the initiative excludes dogs used by public security agencies, narcotics agencies, private security companies, and rescue and emergency services.

The ministry has ordered that all banned breeds that are already in the country, as well as their cross-breeds, must be registered with the authorities within 60 days. Guide dogs and companion dogs for disabled people are also exempt.
