Cricket World Cup 2024: Everything you need to know
The 2024 Cricket World Cup will be held this June. Here’s all you need to know about the ICC Men’s T20.
The USA cricket team’s storybook ride through the ICC Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup has ended, but there’s still plenty of cricket for New Jersey and New York fans to watch.
USA lost all three matches in the second round of this World Cup tournament, known as the Super 8 stage. In this round, eight teams that made it out of the first round were placed in two groups of four and played the other teams in their group in a round-robin schedule.
The two teams from each group with the most wins then go on to the next Knockout stage starting Wednesday to determine the two teams for the World Cup final on Saturday.
The Americans could not get at least two wins that would have qualified them for the next stage. Instead, they lost a close match to South Africa on Wednesday, followed by blowout losses on Friday to the West Indies and then on Sunday to England.
The T20 World Cup will move on with two semifinal Knockout stage games.
South Africa will play Afghanistan on Wednesday after the Afghans pulled off a victory early Tuesday morning over Bangladesh. England will play India on Thursday following India’s close win over longtime rivals Australia on Monday.
Local fans who want to get their fill of World Cup cricket can do so via TV. For those who have become fans of the USA cricket team, another tournament featuring some of the team’s players is coming up in July that they can also view from the comfort of their homes.
The Cricket World Cup remaining
Followers of the India, England, South Africa, and Afghanistan cricket teams this week will have plenty to cheer or lament when those teams take the field for the next round of the World Cup.
South Africa vs. Afghanistan will be on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad and Tobago. India vs. England will be on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Providence Stadium in Guyana.
Both matches can be seen on Willow TV, the sole cable broadcaster of the World Cup in the United States and Canada. Television providers that carry Willow TV are DISH, Sling, FIOS, Spectrum, Xfinity, Optimum, and Optimum TV. A public fan park will be open at the World Trade Center’s Oculus Plaza on June 29, when there will be a giant screen to show the T20 World Cup final — as there were for the first-round matches.
Cricket T20 World Cup: Want to get into cricket? These are the terms to know
England is the defending T20 World Cup champion, having won it all in 2022 over Pakistan. Their Wednesday faceoff with India is a rematch of the 2022 T20 World Cup semifinals, when England beat India. The English team is led by captain Jos Buttler, who scored 83 in the thrashing of the United States on Sunday. England scored 117 runs without losing any wickets (outs) while allowing only 115 to the USA team. Other key players are Chris Jordan and Sam Curran, who also played on the 2022 championship team.
India will try to avoid a repeat of the 2022 semifinal, where they were outscored by England 170 to 168. The Indian team is led by captain Rohit Sharma, who got 92 runs in the 205-to-181 victory over Australia on Monday. Some of the key players are Virat Kohli, who has struggled in this World Cup but is still considered a potent weapon in their attack, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya. All three were stars in the 2022 World Cup campaign that took them to the semifinal.
South Africa and India are the only teams who have not lost a match so far in this T20 World Cup. South Africa has been in the T20 World Cup semifinals in 2009 and 2014, but lost both matches. This year’s squad is headed by captain Aiden Markram, a threat as both batsman and bowler. Their key players are Quinton de Kock, David Miller, and Tabraiz Shamsi, who was named player of the match in the win over West Indies on Sunday for notching three wickets and giving up 27 runs in 4 overs.
Afghanistan will be going to its first semifinal in an ICC tournament. The team qualified to go on to the third stage of the T20 World Cup with its nail-biting, emotional win against Bangladesh that saw several rain delays before they got the ten wickets Bangladeshi batters needed to close out the game at 115 to 105. The team is led by captain Rashid Khan, who got four wickets in the Bangladesh game. Other key players are Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Gulbadin Naib, and Naveen-ul-Haq.
Where to watch USA cricket
The USA team does not have matches scheduled in the immediate future, but there’s a reason for that – Major League Cricket.
Major League Cricket is the professional T20 league based in the U.S. that will starts play on July 5 and ends on July 28. The league formed last year with six teams playing over three weeks in July at Grand Prairie Stadium in Grand Prairie, Texas, and Church Street Park in Morrisville, North Carolina.
This year, the same six teams are playing at the same Texas and North Carolina venues. Those teams are MI New York, Los Angeles Knight Riders, San Francisco Unicorns, Seattle Orcas, Texas Super Kings, and Washington Freedom.
The rosters of the various teams will feature the members of the USA squad who played a role in their surprising effort in the T20 World Cup.
The USA captain, Monank Patel, who helped the team in its upset win on June 6 over Pakistan with 50 runs, and bowler Nosthush Kenjige are on the MI New York roster. Nitish Kumar, Shadley van Schalkwyk and Ali Khan play for the Knight Riders. Corey Anderson is on the Unicorns team. Harmeet Singh is a member of the Orcas. Andries Gous, who had knocked in 80 runs in the USA team’s loss against South Africa, and star bowler Saurabh Netravalkar, play for the Freedom.
Major League Cricket will also feature a host of star cricket players who competed in the World Cup. Australia’s Pat Cummins signed a four-year contract earlier this year to play for San Francisco and is the team captain. David Miller of South Africa is on the Los Angeles team. Nicholas Pooran of the West Indies is suiting up for MI New York. Pakistan’s Imad Wasim is a player for Seattle. Mitchell Santner of New Zealand plays for Texas, while his teammate Lockie Ferguson plays for Washington.
Just as with the T20 World Cup, the matches will be broadcast on Willow TV, with some matches also broadcast on the CBS Sports Network. And there’s good news for New York and New York fans as the YES Network will broadcast several MI New York matches, including the July 5 season opener between New York and Seattle.
