Browning Residents to Receive Refunds for Overcharged Property Tax Bills
In a recent development, state officials are taking action to rectify an issue where residents in Browning were faced with excessively high appraisal values and property tax bills last year. According to a report by Lee Montana, some homeowners experienced a startling increase in their bills, with amounts reaching up to four times more than what they paid previously.
Upon discovering the discrepancy, the State Department of Revenue conducted a reevaluation of the affected properties. It was revealed that a computational error had led to the incorrect valuation of 385 properties in the town. In response to this oversight, state officials have initiated the process of providing refunds to the residents who were overcharged on their property tax bills.
During a presentation to lawmakers in late June, Bryce Kaatz from the department assured that all impacted individuals would receive notification letters containing revised appraisals within the current week. Furthermore, efforts are being made in collaboration with Glacier County to ensure prompt issuance of refunds to the affected homeowners.
Kaatz also mentioned that the department is actively exploring measures to prevent similar errors from occurring in the future, emphasizing the importance of implementing safeguards to safeguard against such inaccuracies.
