CHARLESTON, W.Va –The Capital City is still reaping the rewards from the recent 2024 USA Cycling Pro Road Championships that the city hosted in May.
The six-day event that featured over 400 cyclists from nearly every state in the nation, generated an estimated $4.6 million in economic impact, as reported by the City of Charleston and the Charleston Convention & Visitors Bureau on Thursday. Economic impact numbers
are calculated by the CVB.
In addition to the economic impact, the Pro Road Championships also brought 2,794 overnight guests to Charleston, with visitor spending in the city up by 22%.
Charleston Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin said the event boosted local business and showed off the city.
“Hosting the USA Pro Road National Championships in our Capital City provided a significant boost to our local businesses, hotels, and restaurants while also showcasing our Capital City as a prime location for major sports tournaments,” said Goodwin in a statement.
Charleston will continue to host this major cycling tournament, as 2024 marked the first of a five-year commitment between the city and USA Cycling. Additionally, the final year of the commitment, 2028, will serve as an Olympic-qualifying event.
The 2025 USA Pro Road Cycling Championships will return to Charleston May 20-25 next year, with preparations already underway.
