Alexander Zverev punched his ticket into a second successive final at the Hamburg Open. He saw off Spain’s Pedro Martinez 6-2, 6-4 in an hour and 25 minutes.
The German recorded 13 aces to three double faults in the match. He landed 69% of first serves. Zverev won 89% of first-serve points (31/35). He won 50% second-serve points (8/16). Zverev converted three of eight break points and did not drop his serve in the match. The World No. 4 can add to his trophy cabinet by winning his second title of the season (he also won Rome on clay).
Arthur Fils, meanwhile, routed Sebastian Baez 6-2, 6-2 in 68 minutes. Baez came into the match with a reputation as one of the best clay-court players in men’s tennis and has won more matches on the surface this season than any other player.
But he could not contain the weight of shot from the Frenchman’s racket. Fils was flawless, tallying six aces to zero double faults. He landed 73% first serves and won 76% first-serve points (25/33). Fils won 67% second-serve points (8/12)and converted four of seven break points.

I really like Fils here, and he’s too big of an underdog. Yes, you must respect Zverev’s career and his great track record on clay. But he can be cagey and unwilling to take risks and we’ve seen that far too many times in high-stakes matches. He’s also been playing with a well-known knee injury he sustained at Wimbledon, and he’s been wearing a protective brace since. That’s unlikely to hamper him though because Zverev has played pain-free at this tournament.
Fils has come a long way from losing last year’s semifinal match in straight sets. He’s only dropped one set and hasn’t been broken many times during the week. Pound for pound, I reckon he’ll match Zverev, especially with his ability to inject pace in rallies and take initiative. The top seed will likely win the match, but at +245, you are looking to triple your money backing Fils, who has a decent shot at the title.
