‘I want to be an example for people out there’

Sport is an escape route for Nadine Roos

A lot of Roos’ sporting success could be put down to natural talent but she insists it is her determination to be the best that has made the biggest difference.

“You don’t have to be beaten down if you don’t have everything. Go and get what you want. If you work hard, even with talent, you’re going to get further than someone who has all the talent in the world but doesn’t work hard,” she said.

Playing sport became an escape for Roos, who has admitted to struggling with mental health. She was plagued by injuries as a sprinter but luckily she had a fall-back plan, rugby. She had played some rugby with the boys growing up, so she wasn’t quite charting new territory – and her progress was startling.

“I was progressively getting in to the Springboks team. I was always in for a tournament, always giving my best and chasing my dream,” she recalled of her debut for the national team at the women’s Sevens Series in Dubai in 2016.

Roos would go on to star in two World Cup Sevens tournaments in 2018 and 2022, captaining her team at the latter, and a Rugby World Cup in 2021. And she is now preparing to live her dream at Paris 2024.

“The Olympics is the pinnacle of our sport,” she said. “Hopefully, when we get there not to be too overwhelmed by the experience, soak it all in, but also know that we’re there for one job and we can do some damage there.”
