The LEC Season Finals kicked off with an absolute slugfest in G2 Esports vs MAD Lions KOI — the most prominent teams in the region.

MAD Lions KOI won an outstanding upset in this best-of-five (BO5) against G2 Esports in the first round. This season saw MAD Lions KOI — a team that walked away from Summer Playoffs without a single win — rise from the ashes to take on the best team in EMEA. The Silver Scrapes won them a straight path towards the last match of the LEC season, and a possible Worlds 2024 seed.

We discuss G2 Esports vs MAD Lions KOI season finals match-up results in our full recap below!

MAD Lions KOI Wins BO5 Against G2 Esports In Summer Finals Kickoff
The series started with a big entrance from G2 Esports. The Kings of Europe took control of Game 1 with a convincing 7k gold lead that catapulted them into the lead. In response, Elyoya introduced some CC to help his carries find picks. But another win from Caps and co. put MDK in a precarious spot.

Afterwards, the Spanish boys found great leads once they started to put a lot of pressure on Caps, giving their sidelanes more space to farm as they pleased. After they equalized the score, it was all on the line. And while G2 Esports came dangerously close to turning the game around, another big teamfight forced them to go on the backfoot, ultimately giving MDK the upset they’ve been desparate for since Summer Split.

G2 Esports vs MAD Lions KOI Recap
Match One
Myrwin’s toplane Lulu gave MAD Lions KOI a good wildcard going into the BO5, but the traditional approach by Caps and co. won them a convincing 7k gold lead early into the game.

MDK Fresskowy had a possible turnaround condition with Exreal Muramana. But giving G2 a 10-kill lead and leaving every major jungle objective uncontested didn’t do them any favours here. So G2 Esports claimed first blood on the series.

Match Two
Next game, MDK Elyoya went Morgana to give his team some mitigation. But with the amount of engage coming from G2’s draft, it was almost impossible to lock down anyone in a full-on team fight.

That said, game two stayed on a razor’s edge as both teams fought for dominance. Things seemed decided after MDK overstepped and lost a big fight for drake. But after a messy botlane fight, Elyoya and co. found another angle that let them bounce back and eviscerate the botlane.

Match Three
G2 Hans Sama is notorious for his ruthless Draven plays, and his game hasn’t gotten rusty at all. Despite both teams overextending for an early lead, the game stayed close, giving us the biggest slugfest in Season Finals 2024.

The first real lead went to G2 after Mikyx and Yike locked down MDK’s toplaner for Caps, resulting in an 18-11 scoreboard. Later on, MAD Lions KOI were able to bounce back and even got close to breaking an inhibitor turret. But G2 BrokenBlade’s Kenen led a strong counteroffensive, winning them the game with their own Nexus on 200 HP.

Match Four
MDK were locked in for game four, placing 3v1 pressure on Caps while their sidelanes farmed as much as they could. They found advantages across the map, and took a 2k gold lead before taking the first Cloud Drake and 5 kills over G2 Esports.

The Spanish org worked pretty impressively to keep their lead, wisely getting picks on big-value players like G2 Hans Sama before starting Baron. With better cards on the table, MAD Lions KOI overtook G2 Esports for a convincing win, forcing Silver Scrapes.

Match Five
With their bracket spots on the line, G2 and MDK fought their last match of the day, surprisingly with an Irelia top from BrokenBlade countering a Nidalee. Both champions were buffed in the 14.15 update, but G2’s pick was much more consistent stats-wise.

A 5-kill lead in midgame let Supa break G2’s base open, but a fortuitous fight swung the momentum in G2’s favor. With the Kings threatening to equalize the score, both teams fought in mid to decide the series. A bad move by Caps gave MDK an angle. And shortly after, MDK got their upset and won 3-2.
