Preakness Stakes winner Seize the Grey will not run in the Grade 1 Travers as planned and instead will be pointed to the Pennsylvania Derby (G1).
The decision, reported earlier by Daily Racing Form, was made by officials with MyRacehorse, the syndicate that owns the Arrogate colt.
“There’s quite a few people involved, I guess, in making that decision, and I went along with it,” Lukas told Horse Racing Nation. “I think that they felt that he would probably fit that race better, and they’ve got 2,700 people that want to see him win. So they’re going to skip the Travers.”
Seize the Grey worked five furlongs in 1:01.44 on Monday on the dirt training track at Saratoga.
“He’s doing really well,” Lukas said. “He had a beautiful work yesterday. I took a little off it. I didn’t want him to go too much because I didn’t know the day before yesterday that we were going to skip the Travers. So I was kind of in limbo. But he’s doing very well. He’s sound, he’s good right now and a little break here won’t hurt either.”
Before his win in the Preakness, Seize the Grey won the Pat Day Mile (G2) on the Kentucky Derby undercard. After the Preakness, he was seventh in the Belmont Stakes and fourth last out in the Jim Dandy (G2).
Last month, MyRacehorse and Gainesway Farm announced a stallion deal that could yield his owners up to $13.5 million.
MyRacehorse and its owners will retain 100 percent of the racing interest in the colt and 10 percent of the future stallion rights. Shareholders will continue to receive pro-rata distributions from race earnings as well as distributions earned from the stallion deal.
The base valuation on the purchase was $3.5 million, with a number of possible bonuses to be triggered by subsequent victories by Seize the Grey. The milestones are:
· $3 million for a G1 Travers (G1) win.
· $4 million for a Breeders’ Cup Classic win.
· $2 million for another Grade 1 win not named above, such as the Pennsylvania Derby.
· $1 million if he’s named champion 3-year-old.
