Ferran Torres did not play any part in Barcelona’s defeat in the Joan Gamper Trophy earlier this week and thus made his first appearance of the season last night against Valencia.
Taking to the field at the stadium he formerly called home, the 24-year-old winger was simply horrendous in the 64 minutes that he played.
Torres completed just 10 passes, made one key pass, completed 25% of his attempted crosses and missed one big chance on the night and was one of the players who contributed the least to the win.
Fans lash out on social media
After his poor performance against Valencia last night, Barcelona fans cut Torres no slack on social media, making their disapproval of his participation clear.
Almost instantly after the game, the Spanish winger had his comments inbox full on his latest Instagram post with fans spewing overt hate towards the player.
Some comments went as far as calling him the worst ever and pressurising him to leave the club.
“Sardine Torres!”
“Time for you to leave asap.”
Other messages, meanwhile, were purely blatant insults directed towards his play and were completely unwarranted.
“You’re the worst player in history.”
“Leave the football before the football leaves you.”
Despite being linked with a move away from the club in recent months, Torres has apparently opted to stay. He wishes to fight for minutes under the new manager, especially given the lack of a natural left-winger.
Barcelona, meanwhile, are under pressure to sell players and the Spaniard would be one of the best-placed candidates to leave.
Nevertheless, his decision to stay simply cannot be met with such online bullying and public shaming for he is a player who defends the Catalan crest with pride every time he takes to the field.
