Just two games into the season, the injuries are starting to pile up for FC Barcelona.
After losing Andreas Christensen to an Achilles tendon issue last week, the Catalans will face Rayo Vallecano tonight without another defender – Eric Garcia, the club have confirmed.
“First-team player Eric Garcia has plantar fasciitis in his right foot. His evolution will determine his return to training,” the statement from the club read.
Garcia returned to Barcelona after a season-long loan stint at Girona and had received minutes off the bench in the first two league games against Valencia and Athletic Club.
In the past few days, though, the centre-back had been linked with a move back to Girona, with there being talks of a potential transfer for a fee of €15 million.
As things stand, it is unclear as to how long the defender will be out of action for, with the recovery timeline for such an injury ranging from a few weeks to a few months.
More updates will be awaited on the situation, but Barcelona are in a precarious position now with no Garcia, Christensen, and Ronald Araujo to call for in defence.
It leaves Hansi Flick with Pau Cubarsi and Inigo Martinez as the main options and with Jules Kounde likely to continue at right-back, the manager has called up youngsters Sergi Dominguez and Andres Cuenca to the squad for tonight’s visit to Vallecas.
