A dreary evening in the UEFA Champions League was made worse after an injury to Kevin De Bruyne in the first game of the competition. Manchester City hosted Inter Milan in a rematch of the 2023 UEFA Champions League Final. Unlike that game in Istanbul, Manchester City drew with the Italian champions in a scoreless affair. Kevin De Bruyne’s injury will be far more concerning than picking up one point instead of three on Wednesday night.
In the first half, star midfielder Kevin De Bruyne limped after a challenge late in the first half. In the 43rd minute, De Bruyne was stuffed as Inter Milan goalkeeper Yann Sommer denied the Belgian from close range. The interchange looked awkward for De Bruyne, who may have slightly rolled his ankle. Although he continued for the closing minutes of the first half, De Bruyne was unfit to continue.
Kevin De Bruyne’s injury critically affected Manchester City’s play. Having been instrumental in the side’s attack going forward, Manchester City looked devoid of creativity in the second half. Granted, much of that comes from Pep Guardiola’s style of play. City controlled the ball just outside the Inter Milan area. Yet, at no point did Manchester City look like a legitimate threat. Sommer made a handful of saves, but seldom were those legitimate tests on his goal.
As the injury is so fresh, there is minimal indication as to the severity of the knock. However, De Bruyne had played all but two minutes in the Premier League this season. He has been instrumental in the side picking up four wins from four games and racing out to a lead in the Premier League. The Belgian has previously been at the center of injury concerns, and that could be the problem once again for City.
Significant game at the weekend changes due to De Bruyne injury
Depending on how serious the injury is, De Bruyne could miss time. How much time is anyone’s guess. However, City has one of its most important games of the season on Sunday….
