As reported by the Daily Record, Newcastle United have agreed terms with St Mirren assistant manager Diarmuid O’Carroll to take over as our Under 21s boss following Ben Dawson’s departure.
O’Carroll joins Jack Ross, former St Mirren and Sunderland Manager, at the club in helping to develop the young talent at Newcastle and bring through the next generation for Eddie Howe’s first team.
The Irishman has played a big role at St Mirren in the last couple of years helping them to achieve to finish fifth in the Scottish Premiership last season.
O’Carroll also brings experience at international level having joined Michael O’Neill’s backroom staff for the Northern Ireland first team as a senior coach back in March 2023.
Newcastle’s Under-21s currently sit in 17th in the Premier League 2 having won one, drawn one and lost two in our opening four games of the season.
O’Carroll has a huge task ahead of him managing some exciting talents like Trevan Sanusi, Alfie Harrison and Cathal Heffernan who will all be hoping to get some first-team action in the not too distant future.
This comes after former U21 boss Ben Dawson left his role on Tyneside over the summer after an offer to become part of Steve Cooper’s first team coaching staff at Leicester City.
