Brandon Nimmo delivered a crucial performance for the New York Mets during Sunday’s game, achieving a significant career milestone in the process.
Nimmo stepped up to the plate with the Mets trailing the Houston Astros 4-2 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Despite facing an 0-2 count, Nimmo capitalized on a fastball down the middle from Bryan Abreu, launching a 412-foot, two-run home run to left-center, leveling the score at four runs each.
This key moment not only helped New York get back into the game but also marked Nimmo’s 100th career home run. As the Mets and Astros are currently in a rain delay in the bottom of the ninth with a tied score of 4-4, Nimmo’s impact on the game remains palpable.
Nimmo made his MLB debut in 2016, five years after being chosen by the Mets in the first round of the MLB Draft. Despite becoming a regular starter in New York’s lineup by 2018, injuries and the challenges brought by COVID-19 limited his appearances to under 100 games until 2022.
Since the beginning of the 2022 season, Nimmo has participated in 379 out of the Mets’ 405 games, showcasing his consistency on the field. While he accumulated 47 home runs in his first six MLB seasons, Nimmo has already hit 53 home runs over the last three seasons, with half a season remaining.
Throughout his career, the 31-year-old boasts a .267 batting average with 762 hits, 330 RBIs, an .826 OPS, and a 23.1 WAR. In the current 2024 season, Nimmo is batting .244 with 13 home runs, 49 RBIs, an .808 OPS, and a 2.0 WAR. Impressively, over his last 14 games, Nimmo has recorded a .370 batting average with six home runs, 17 RBIs, and a 1.186 OPS.
Nimmo joined the ranks of 997 players in MLB history who have hit 100 or more home runs, with recent additions prior to Nimmo including Will Smith, Jeimer Candelario, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Nimmo is also among the 16 players who have reached the 100-home run milestone in a Mets uniform. With his lucrative eight-year, $162 million contract signed with New York before the previous season, Nimmo is poised to continue making significant contributions to the team.
