In May, according to the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services Research & Planning section, the seasonally adjustedunemployment rate increased slightly from 2.8% to 2.9% compared to April. The department sent a pamphlet to the Star-Tribune stating that this change deviates slightly from the usual seasonal pattern for May.
Unemployment rates rose in Carbon and Sweetwater counties, while there was a decrease in Washakie, Sublette, Park, Niobrara, and Lincoln counties. Natrona County also experienced an increase, with the unemployment rate rising from 3% in April to 3.1% in May, compared to 2.8% in May 2023. The counties with the highest unemployment rates in May were Big Horn, Sublette, and Uinta, each at 3.4%, while Niobrara had the lowest rate at 2.1%.
According to the same pamphlet, Current Employment Statistics estimates show that total nonfarm employment in Wyoming, not seasonally adjusted and measured by place of work, increased from 292,300 in May 2023 to 295,200 in May 2024, indicating a growth of 2,900 jobs or 1%.
Over the past year, Wyoming’s unemployment rate has remained relatively stable between 2.8% and 3%, while the national unemployment rate is at 4%.
