Switzerland and northern Italy were recently hit by severe storms that resulted in devastating flooding and landslides, leading to the unfortunate deaths of at least four individuals, as reported by authorities on Sunday.
Tragedy in Ticino Canton
In the Italian-speaking Ticino canton, located on the southern side of the Alps, three bodies were discovered in the Fontana area of the Maggia valley after a landslide occurred. The region experienced relentless storms and heavy rainfall over Saturday and throughout the night, prompting the evacuation of camping sites along the Maggia River. The adverse weather conditions also caused part of the Visletto road bridge to collapse, with one person reported missing in the neighboring Lavizzara valley.
Chaos in Valais Canton
Further north, the Rhone River overflowed in multiple areas of Valais canton, resulting in the flooding of a highway and a railway line. Police highlighted that the southern side valleys of the Rhone bore the brunt of the intense rainfall. Tragically, a man was found deceased at a hotel in Saas-Grund early Sunday, after being reported missing by his partner. Authorities suspect that he was caught off guard by the sudden floodwaters. Meanwhile, another man remains missing in the Binn area near the Italian border since Saturday evening.
Impact in Northern Italy
In addition to Switzerland, northern Italy also suffered from floods, thunderstorms, and landslides. Firefighters sprang into action, conducting approximately 80 rescue operations and evacuating numerous individuals in the northern Piedmont region. In a harrowing incident between Montanaro and San Benigno Canavese, firefighters rescued two adults and a 3-month-old infant who were stranded in their car due to rising waters from the Orco torrent. Several villages in the Valle D’Aosta region were left isolated as streams overflowed, and landslides further exacerbated the situation.
