Norwegian company Equinor has awarded a contract to Aker Solutions for topside modifications on the Troll A platform, part of the Troll Phase 3 project offshore Norway.

The engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning (EPCIC) contract is valued between Nkr500m ($47.53m) and Nkr1.5bn. It will focus on enhancing gas production from the Troll West gas reservoir.

Located in the North Sea, approximately 80km north-west of Bergen, the Troll field is Norway’s largest gas producer and contributes 10% of Europe’s gas supply.

The Troll Phase 3 project focuses on extracting gas from the gas cap above the Troll West oil column while maintaining oil production.

The processed gas is routed to the Troll A platform and into the existing infrastructure network.

Under the contract, Aker will prepare the Troll A platform for processing gas from eight new wells at Troll West.

This follows the completion of the first stage in 2021, where Aker Solutions delivered a new module for the platform and subsea systems for Stage I of the field development.

Aker Solutions’ Life Cycle segment executive vice-president and head Paal Eikeseth said: “We are excited to continue following the significant development of the giant Troll field and to move forward with the next step of Troll Phase 3. In-depth knowledge of Troll A, the equipment on the asset, and the modifications made in the first phase is essential, providing a strong foundation for executing this new scope.”

Additionally, Aker Solutions is tasked with the installation and preparation of equipment necessary for the clean-up of initial well fluids during the wells’ start-up phase.

The contract work will be distributed across several Aker Solutions offices, with project management, detail engineering, procurement and shop engineering being conducted from the Stavanger office in Norway, supported by teams in Bergen, Norway and Mumbai, India.

Construction and prefabrication will take place at the company’s yard in Egersund.

OneSubsea, which is 20% owned by Aker Solutions, has also been contracted previously to provide the subsea production system for the project.

The contract commences immediately and is due for completion by the end of 2027.

Earlier this month, Equinor announced the partial electrification of the Troll B and C platforms in the North Sea from shore.
