In contrast to previous studies exploring distant ecosystems like ocean depths, this investigation took a more localized approach by sampling everyday items from volunteers’ homes. After analyzing DNA sequences from these samples, researchers noted significant variability with no overlapping virus types between different bathroom items.
The Dominance of Mycobacteriophages
The most frequently encountered representatives among the sampled viruses were mycobacteriophages—viruses adept at infecting mycobacterial organisms linked with diseases such as tuberculosis and leprosy. Hartmann speculated about their practical application: “It’s possible we could use mycobacteriophages as tools for sanitizing plumbing systems from harmful pathogens.”
