Even despite incoming change in the global political landscape, Europe stands at a critical juncture where an underutilised research and innovation system is hampering growth of our industries against global competition (“Europe-first plan urged in response to Trump”, Report, December 3).
This challenge is our greatest opportunity. Europe has a strong reputation for industrial prowess and excels in green technologies. The new European Commission must play to its strengths, leveraging Europe’s favourable economic conditions and demand in the energy transition to bolster sustainable innovation across sectors. Clean technologies serve as the bedrock for the digitisation, electrification and energy efficiency that is needed to reduce costs in industry and increase Europe’s global competitiveness.
The EU must drive this forward — incentivising investments, increasing funding and streamlining regulation to create a more robust and competitive innovation ecosystem. Doing so will reinvigorate Europe and set the standard for sustainable growth globally.
