WASHINGTON – Former Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett’s time as U.S. Ambassador to Luxembourg is quickly coming to an end.
President-elect Donald Trump this week nominated Stacey Feinberg, a businesswoman and musical theater producer, to replace Barrett as the United States’ top diplomat in one of Europe’s smallest countries.
Barrett, 71, was nominated to the ambassadorship by President Joe Biden in the summer of 2021. The Senate confirmed him in December of the same year and he began his assignment in Luxembourg in early 2022. Trump’s announcement nominating Feinberg to the post means Barrett will likely have to leave the post sometime early next year.
He did not immediately respond to an interview request by the Journal Sentinel.
Feinberg is the president of the investment firm 33 Capital and has co-produced musical theater plays, according to her LinkedIn profile. She is also a motivational speaker and a board member on the Women Founders Network, a group that supports women in business.
Trump in a short statement announcing the nomination said Feinberg is “committed to supporting women in launching their careers, and scaling their businesses to unprecedented success.”
“Stacy will be GREAT, and make America proud!” Trump posted on his social media site. He made no mention of Barrett.
The announcement was among several ambassadorship nominations Trump made late Monday night. He also named his nominees for ambassador to Japan, the Dominican Republic, Austria and Uruguay.
Barrett, a native of the west side of Milwaukee, first ran for public office in 1982 when he lost a bid for the state Assembly at age 28. He ran again two years later and won, staying in the Assembly for two terms. In 1989, he won a special election to the state Senate.
Barrett ran successfully for Congress in Wisconsin’s 5th District in 1992 and was reelected four times.
He later ran unsuccessfully for governor before serving as mayor of Milwaukee from 2004 until his confirmation as ambassador to Luxembourg in 2021.
