Southend Corporation Transport main garage was at 87 London Road, and it was perfectly easy to view the buses parked there without straying on to the premises. Looking very smart freshly painted into Southend’s blue and primrose livery was the former London Transport DM1015 (GHV15N), one of LT’s unwanted Daimler Fleetlines that were passed on to Ensign of Purfleet for sale or scrapping. At the time, I was eagerly recording these cast-offs in their new colours.
The DMS-type fitted well within the Southend fleet, whose own purchases had been of comparable Leyland-engined Fleetlines. However, it would appear from the Ian’s Bus Stop files that Southend’s ex-DM/DMSs were loaned or leased from Ensign and not purchased outright. Thus GHV15N seen here had just a brief time with Southend before reverting to Ensign, being converted to open-top and then exported to work with Big Apple Tours in New York City.
