On Tuesday, Russian authorities filed criminal charges against Galina Timchenko, the founder and publisher of the exiled news platform Meduza, accusing her of facilitating the operations of an “undesirable” organization.
The Investigative Committee of Moscow, which handles major criminal cases, claimed in a statement that Timchenko shared videos online that ignited public protests and engaged individuals in activities associated with an “undesirable” organization.
Investigators are contemplating placing Timchenko on the nation’s wanted list.
Timchenko, 64, was the editor-in-chief of the Lenta.ru news site until 2014, when she was removed by its owner, who has ties to the Kremlin. After her dismissal, she, along with former Lenta.ru journalists, moved to Latvia to launch Meduza, which was designated a “foreign agent” in 2021.
In 2023, Russian prosecutors classified Meduza as an “undesirable” organization, prohibiting it from operating within the country and criminalizing any connections to it.
The Justice Ministry labeled Timchenko as a “foreign agent” the following year, accusing her of opposing the nation’s “special military operation” in Ukraine and disseminating “false information aimed at creating a negative perception of the Russian armed forces.”
In June 2024, a Moscow court imposed a 14,000-ruble ($175) administrative fine on Timchenko for her participation in an “undesirable organization.”
