Popular actor Taylor Wily, known for his role in the reimagined crime series Hawaii Five-0, has passed away at the age of 56.
His legal representative confirmed the sad news to CBS News, the American broadcasting network affiliated with BBC. No specific details regarding the cause of his death have been disclosed at this time, and inquiries have been made to obtain a statement from his management team.
Originally hailing from Hawaii, Wily portrayed the character Kamekona Tupuola in Hawaii Five-0, a role that he also reprised in Magnum P.I.
Following his untimely demise, numerous tributes have flooded in, with Peter Lenkov, the executive producer of both television series, expressing his overwhelming sorrow.
Lenkov shared in an Instagram post, alongside a touching photograph with Wily, “I am devastated. Heartbroken. I’ll post some detailed feeling in a few days. Just too hard right now.” It was followed by another post where he reminisced about their first encounter and how he was captivated by Wily’s charisma during the audition process.
Describing their bond, Lenkov wrote, “You were family. And I will miss you every day, brother.” He also recounted their recent conversation where they reflected on the perfect fit Wily was for the role they created together.
Wily originally pursued a career in sumo wrestling but eventually shifted his focus to mixed martial arts (MMA) after sustaining numerous injuries. Transitioning to acting, he landed the role of the affable informant Kamekona on Hawaii Five-0 from 2010 to 2020, and later made guest appearances on Magnum P.I.
His diverse filmography included a notable appearance alongside Jason Segel and Mila Kunis in the romantic comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
Despite his varied roles, Wily often expressed that his time on Hawaii Five-0 held a special place in his heart.
Reflecting on his experience, he once said, “It’s the best job in the world — you get to play Hollywood but be right here in Hawaii. Home.”
