Did you know that Southeast Asia is home to some of the largest venomous centipedes in the world? These creatures with a hundred legs can reach lengths exceeding six inches, setting the stage for a chilling narrative.
In the horror film CREEPY CRAWLY (also known as THE ONE HUNDRED), directors Pakphum Wongjinda & Chalit Krileadmongkon, along with Charoen Kathitisuwan, draw inspiration from the menacing deity Tabonglung, a monstrous centipede that takes over human bodies.
The story kicks off with a young vlogger, Kat, venturing into the forest in a quaint Thai town during a COVID lockdown in March 2020. A group of individuals arrives at the Srichanpen Hotel for a mandatory two-week quarantine, unknowingly stepping into a nightmare that unfolds within the first day.
We are introduced to key characters like Tevika ”Fame” Marley, a journalist investigating the hotel with her brother Fiew, and Leo and Lena, siblings harboring resentful feelings towards their father. The hotel’s proprietor, Prawit, exudes a shady vibe while the newest staff member, Kat, unwittingly brings an ominous presence within the hotel’s walls.
With centipedes serving as harbingers of doom in the story, the film strategically places them throughout, evoking a sense of unease matched by the eerie hotel design. The depiction of Tabonglung mirrors the macabre creations from iconic horror movies like THE THING.
Amidst the backdrop of a pandemic, the characters’ use of protective masks is touched upon, though eventually discarded to reveal their emotions as events escalate. The narrative skillfully weaves suspense through the mystery of possession, delivering genuine scares and emotional depth through family dynamics and heart-wrenching moments.
The cast delivers solid performances, with Mike Angelo navigating his character’s complexities with agility, portraying a neurochemical imbalance that leads to sudden outbursts.
While some questions remain unanswered, CREEPY CRAWLY offers a satisfying blend of monster horror set in Thailand, with a language mix of Thai and sign language, accompanied by English subtitles.
