Barcelona began their 2024/25 season with a convincing 2-1 win over Valencia. In what was Hansi Flick’s first competitive game of his Barcelona tenure, the German manager was marred by injuries and a lack of player registrations.
The midfield, in particular, was expected to be the weakest link as Ilkay Gundogan, Frenkie de Jong, Pedri and Gavi were all unavailable for respective reasons, although Pedri did appear in the second half.
This means Flick had to rely on La Masia talents such as Marc Casado and Marc Bernal and it is safe to say the young duo did not disappoint.
Additionally, Gerard Martin and Pau Victor also made their La Liga debuts and speaking about the impact of La Masia, Mundo Deportivo quoted the manager as saying,
“The La Masia players had already shown they were ready during the USA tour in pre-season. I’m very happy with my team and our performance.”
“I don’t care how many young players I play. It’s incredible to have them,” he added.

It must be noted that a certain Marc Bernal became the first academy player to make his competitive debut for the team in the ‘Hansi Flick era’ and the manager was quite impressed with his performance.
“Marc Bernal had a very good game,” he said.
Speaking further, Flick had a special mention for a certain Lamine Yamal, who has endured a difficult week in his personal life after his father was attacked and stabbed in their hometown of Mataro.
“Lamine Yamal is an amazing player. It was an emotional game for him after what happened this week. I’m proud of him, he helped us win today.”
“He’s important for us and everyone wants to see him play, and that’s why they applauded him here too,” added Flick.
