Liam Delap’s second goal of the season gave Ipswich Town an eighth-minute lead at home to Aston Villa in pursuit of their first win since their return to the Premier League on Sunday.

Forward Delap beat goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez with a first-time strike from inside the penalty area, meeting Jack Clarke’s cut-back from the left.

Town’s joy proved short-lived, Villa drawing level seven minutes later when Morgan Rogers intercepted a Jacob Greaves clearance and exchanged passes with Ollie Watkins before slamming in an equaliser.

Morgan Rogers goal

England striker Watkins set up Rogers with his sixth goal involvement in five games and third assist in three away matches.

Argentina international Martinez may feel he could have saved the opener, conceding at his near post as the Villans fell behind for a third successive league game.

Former Middlesbrough, Fulham, Chelsea and Leicester City goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer did not believe Martinez was at fault.

Delap goal ‘a great finish’

“It’s a great finish,” said the ex-Australia international. “Emi Martinez gets a good hand on it but he has no chance from that distance. Brilliant start from Ipswich.

“The goal Villa conceded was against the run of play. They get one opportunity and they take it, Rogers and Watkins combining really well. Rogers’ touch on the ball is sublime.”

Ipswich have scored three times during the first 15 minutes of games following their promotion from the Championship last season.

The Tractor Boys had drawn their three previous matches, captain Sam Morsy scoring a last-gasp equaliser in their 1-1 draw at Southampton on September 21.

“We are respecting Ipswich” 🤝
