As a senior official within India’s distinguished Indian Administrative Service, Dr. Kumar has dedicated over 30 years to policy development and program execution at high levels within various governmental bodies including the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and regional governments, as well as UN agencies.
A Legacy of Public Health Achievements
Throughout his career, Dr. Kumar has made notable contributions to public health initiatives. He played a pivotal role in achieving polio eradication in 2014 and was essential to eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus by 2015. Additionally, he was instrumental in launching Mission Indradhanush—the largest immunisation drive globally—in 2015, significantly broadening India’s vaccine repertoire with six new vaccines introduced within an unprecedented timeframe.
