Rihanna started off Election Day with a voting joke and implicit support of Vice President Kamala Harris — and shut down more than a few trolls lurking in her Instagram comments along the way.
The 36-year-old singer, who hails from Barbados, shared an IG reel of herself in sunglasses in the car, captioned, “POV: me trying to sneak into the polls with my son’s passport #votecauseicant.” Since Rihanna can’t vote in the U.S. presidential election, the video was a playful missive for her fans to vote instead (and a reference to her sons RZA and Riot Rose). She capped things off with a text caption that read, “when protecting p*ssies and firing p*ssies can happen all in one vote. #votecauseicant #TanSuitSeason.”
Then the comments began roll in, encompassing everything from right wing misinformation to anti-immigration propaganda to blatant xenophobia. But somehow they didn’t see user @badgalriri coming.
When one person wrote that “illegal voting is a crime. Maybe she should be arrested for trying,” Rihanna hit back with a simple, “shut up Karen.” When another said, “I voted for closed borders, deportations, and staying out of foreign conflicts. abortions are probably nowhere near as important as y’all are making it seem,” Rihanna replied, “you’re f*cked! And so is the America you dream of. Hope you don’t have to find out the hard way.”
It just kept going. A user incorrectly stated she could have just “setup her paper for voting as [sic] migrant” — note: this is not a thing, you have to be a U.S. citizen to vote in U.S. federal or state elections — and Rihanna replied, “I LOVE my Bajan passport! I came here to work and pay taxes! You’re welcome.” Another went on a paragraph-long monologue about the “right and wrong way” to enter the U.S. Rihanna’s comment: “Where were you in [sic] Jan 6 sis? Stick to your discounted crotch. We out here fighting for its rights!”
User: “Why should you be able to if you are not a legal citizen?” Rihanna: “Ew! Hate an illiterate ass ho.” Evergreen comment.
Luckily, more than a few people in the comments got the joke and supported Rihanna’s pro-choice stance on abortion rights. And Rihanna also recognized the power of her fanbase: “I’m sleeping outside [the voting locations] to make sure the navy shows up.” Ah, the power of the mythological R9.
