Uruguay triumphed 3-2 over Colombia on Friday in a dramatic South American World Cup qualifier, scoring a last-minute goal to seal the win. This was Uruguay’s first home win in a year.

Juan Fernando Quintero opened the scoring for the visitors in the 31st minute with a surprising direct free kick shot from the left edge of the penalty box. The hosts equalized in the 57th minute with an own goal by Davinson Sánchez. Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay looked set for a 2-1 win until Colombia levelled through Andres Gomez in the sixth minute of stoppage time.
But once the celebrations and the lengthy VAR check were over — Uruguay pumped the ball into the box and the ball fell to the Manchester United midfielder Ugarte and the substitute buried the chance for his first international goal.
The most dramatic moments of the match in Montevideo came in injury time. André Gomez equalized for Colombia in the 96th minute from close range, but Manuel Ugarte gave the hosts the victory four minutes later with a shot from the edge of the box. Now, Next Tuesday, Uruguay will travel to Brazil and Colombia will host Ecuador.
Meanwhile, World champions Argentina suffered a 2-1 defeat to Paraguay while rivals Brazil were held to a 1-1 draw at Venezuela as South America’s big guns struggled in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying on Thursday. It started well for Lionel Scaloni’s team, also reigning Copa America champions, as they grabbed an early lead through Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez.
The top six teams will qualify automatically for the 2026 World Cup hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
