The Latin American and Caribbean region is expected to reach 773 million air passengers by the end of 2024, driven by a surge in aviation infrastructure investments.
This marks a 12.4% increase compared to pre-COVID levels, according to the Airports Council International – Latin America and Caribbean (ACI-LAC).
Projections for 2025 indicate continued growth, with air passenger numbers expected to reach 796 million—a 6.4% rise from 2024. This steady upward trend highlights the region’s robust recovery and the growing demand for air travel.
ACI-LAC emphasized the need for enhanced investment in airport infrastructure and quality standards to support this growth.
“With traffic expected to grow in the coming years, we must be prepared to serve new passengers, improve airport infrastructure, and build new ones,” said Rafael Echevarne, Director General of ACI-LAC, at a press conference in Mexico recently.
The aviation industry in the region was severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading several airlines to declare bankruptcy. However, the current recovery trajectory is optimistic.
LATAM Airlines, for example, has announced a $2 billion investment in Brazil over the next two years. This initiative will focus on improving passenger services, advancing technology, and enhancing aircraft maintenance. The plan also includes transforming its São Carlos facility into a key aerospace hub for South America.
Significant airport infrastructure projects are also underway. Tobago, part of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, is preparing to unveil its upgraded ANR Robinson International Airport in March 2025. The $130 million expansion features a new terminal designed to handle three million passengers annually, tripling the airport’s current capacity.
