The newly formed Wrexham Ecology Co-operative brings together key players such as FI Real Estate Management (Firem), United Environmental Services (UES), Enfys Ecology, North Wales Wildlife Trust, Amphibian and Reptile Conservation, and Butterfly Conservation. This coalition is dedicated to developing a comprehensive ecological strategy for the Wrexham Industrial Estate.
A Comprehensive Approach to Ecological Planning
The co-operative’s efforts will encompass extensive land surveys, biodiversity evaluations, and a sustainable management strategy covering 75 acres across six distinct sites. This area currently supports 340 businesses and provides employment for approximately 16,500 individuals.
Key areas of focus include initiatives for bee preservation and the planting of wildflowers. Importantly, this collaborative effort also emphasizes engagement with the local community by partnering with various entities including businesses, schools, colleges, and universities.
Strategic Investment in Wildlife Preservation
A primary step involves an assertive investment of £350,000 earmarked for a 30-acre ecological zone adjacent to Firem’s forthcoming development—Wrexham 1M—an impressive one million square foot industrial and logistics project.
Notably, one of the project’s priorities is relocating great crested newts from within the estate’s boundaries. This action follows over twenty years since Wrexham Borough Council devised an action plan aimed at safeguarding this species.
Mark Adams from Firem expressed enthusiasm about this partnership: “We are thrilled to join forces with our partners in drafting a long-term sustainable biodiversity plan that will oversee the management of ecologically rich areas within Wrexham Industrial Estate.” He underscored how this cooperative effort promises to enhance their approach toward protecting natural spaces during development activities across their portfolio in the area.
Adrian Lloyd Jones from North Wales Wildlife Trust echoed these sentiments: “Establishing the Wrexham Ecology Co-operative marks another vital step toward achieving our enduring vision for enriching biodiversity around this industrial region.”

He continued by highlighting that “the creation of this cooperative signifies an essential new chapter at Wrexham Industrial Estate,” where they aim not only to safeguard wildlife but also construct meaningful environments catering both purposes—nurturing nature while serving community needs.

As part of its opening activities following its inaugural meeting held recently; plans are set into motion that outline objectives for upcoming months—including initial tasks devoted specifically towards transitioning newt populations safely away from developments designated near their current habitat.
