FOR MANY PLAYERS of the 2000-2022 start years, the COVID pandemic got here on the worst doable time. Few of those gamers have been established and the pandemic restricted probabilities for gamers to play, get observed or develop. Whereas some first-team leagues returned inside 4 months of the preliminary shutdown, the decrease and youth ranges remained shut down. When play lastly resumed, there was a backlog of gamers within the pipeline, and plenty of have been very rusty.

Ben Bender, 21, was a part of this difficult path however has navigated it properly. When the pandemic hit, he was making ready to enter faculty with the College of Maryland – a program that has produced many national-team caliber gamers (Zack Steffen, Taylor Twellman, Maurice Edu, Omar Gonzalez, Robbie Rogers, Clarence Goodson, Eryk Williamson, Danny Califf and Donovan Pines have all represented the U.S. nationwide crew in official competitions). When he arrived on campus, the season was postponed till the spring leaving 2020 as virtually a misplaced yr.

However Bender labored extraordinarily onerous off the sphere and it set himself up for a giant 2021.

“I think going into Maryland, that was probably the best possible spot for me to develop,” Bender informed ASN. “Looking back on it, it was probably good. I grew athletically so much more in that first year –  working out and just training with guys that were bigger, stronger and faster. I actually think that fall season of 2020 helped me to get stronger for the spring season one when everyone resumed play for college. It definitely was tough not to play games because those are how you get better. But it set me up for a really good sophomore fall season… I wouldn’t have left if it wasn’t a Generation Adidas contract.”

One of many frequent criticisms of the school sport as a developmental path for professionals is the quick season. When children in MLS or European academies have seasons that final a lot of the yr, the school season is three months. In 2021, nonetheless, Bender discovered himself loaded with video games. The NCAA had a spring season in 2021 to make up for the 2020 season after which had a fall season for 2021. In the summertime, he had the possibility to play for FC Baltimore Christos of the NPSL.

The result’s that Bender’s sport took off. By the autumn, he was a United Soccer Coaches First Group All-American. Nonetheless, 20, he signed a Era Adidas and was signed by Charlotte with the primary general decide within the MLS draft.

“I didn’t know  I was coming to Charlotte until a week or two before the draft. I had to pack up everything and then move to Charlotte real quick. The pre-season was super fun, but it was definitely a transition. It was a big step from college. The speed of play was really fast and everyone was super strong. I had to improve in those areas. And yeah, I’ve just been working really hard trying to get better, and I’m learning every day from the coaches, from the players and veterans on our team.”

Bender has been top-of-the-line surprises within the league when it comes to younger Individuals who’re new to the league. Taking part in totally on the left aspect of the midfield, Bender has a objective and three assists via the primary eight video games serving to an enlargement crew get off to a good begin beneath Miguel Ángel Ramírez.

“It’s always tough for expansion teams,” Bender stated. “We’ve done pretty well so far and we’re hoping for a few more wins. We’re always going to compete and we’re going to give our best effort every time we step on the field, even when we go through the sufferings and the trials of the year. We will stick with the game model that Miguel provides for us. That can take us a long way.”

Ramirez agrees.

“He’s winning the respect of everybody because – he’s so good,” coach Miguel Angel Ramirez stated about Bender. “He’s becoming a leader because he’s been important for us and everybody knows.”

As most know, the panorama of soccer has modified on this nation. High younger American gamers usually don’t play faculty and highschool soccer. As a substitute, they decide to affix academies – usually in the US though a couple of do transfer overseas at an early age.

On this regard, Bender is a throwback. As a local of Baltimore, he performed each highschool and faculty. Whereas he did play briefly with the Philadelphia Union’s academy in 2015-16, he’s a product of the older highschool to school route. That path is just not fully lifeless, nonetheless, as the highest decide within the 2020 draft, Daryl Dike, additionally performed highschool and faculty.

“In college soccer, there are tons of good players out there,” Bender stated. “I think that the academy path is a really awesome route to the pro level, and I think that’s how it how it should be. But I think that college soccer is and should continue to be a way for players to develop academically and in soccer too. It is still super relevant.”

“It was a tough decision for me to play in high school instead of academy,” Bender stated. “Emotionally, it was important. You are with some of your best friends that you grow up with and then you go to high school where you get to play with them. The academy is the better level. So that was that was really hard for me to decide where to play. It ended up working out. Looking back on the high school years – I have all those relationships and I was a part of a really awesome community. And so that’s something that I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”

Bender has loads of targets on his plate. He desires to play a task in Charlotte having a robust inaugural season and develop as a participant. So far he’s off to a robust begin. There may be additionally the worldwide stage, and that additionally drives Bender as a result of he has by no means obtained a youth nationwide crew call-up.

The complete nationwide crew continues to be a great distance off, however Bender may need one other avenue. If the U.S. U-20 crew succeeds this summer time to qualify for the 2024 Olympics, that event will then be open to the 2001/02 start years (Bender was born in 2001). Bender has been made conscious of that and positively hopes that would open a door as properly.

“As a personal goal, I want to try and be to make a national team camp,” Bender stated. “It would be amazing and an awesome opportunity.  Growing up, I thought I had the opportunity, but I never got called in. All my time before signing a pro contract, I pretty much put my head down and wanted to work as hard as possible to make it professionally and then hopefully play for the national team.”
