Truecaller Introduces Real-Time Caller ID Functionality for iOS Users
The widely used caller identification application, Truecaller, is launching its latest update, which brings real-time caller ID capability to its iOS subscribers. This significant enhancement aligns with Apple’s introduction of Live Caller ID Lookup in iOS 18, enabling third-party applications to acquire caller information securely from their servers.
How to Activate Live Caller ID on Your iPhone
iPhone users can activate the Live Caller ID Lookup feature by navigating to Settings ➝ Apps ➝ Phone and selecting Call Blocking & Identification. Here, they should toggle on all options related to Truecaller and then reopen the app for seamless integration.
The Technology Behind Truecaller’s Update
As reported by TechCrunch, Truecaller has developed a new server infrastructure specifically designed for this feature. They have established a distinct encrypted database tailored for iOS users in addition to their existing database utilized by Android users:
The Apple Phone app sends encrypted queries to this database and retrieves encrypted answers that are decrypted solely on the user’s device (iPhone) for immediate display of caller identification.
This technique employs “homomorphic encryption,” allowing computations on encrypted data without exposing it initially; decryption occurs only on the client-side when verifying against stored information.
User Base Insights and Economic Impact
Out of approximately 2.6 million overall subscribers, around 750,000 utilize Truecaller on their iPhones. Notably, while most subscribers are Android users, a substantial 40% of Truecaller’s revenue stems from its iOS subscriptions due in part to an impressive fivefold conversion rate from free use to premium service compared with Android users. Additionally, revenue generated from iPhone customers is reported at a staggering 80% higher than that from Android devotees.
Enhanced User Experience Features
This update not only introduces real-time capabilities but also boasts an updated user interface where callers’ names are displayed prominently above their phone numbers in bold text. Other enhancements include automatic spam call blocking and an improved searching function allowing access to previously identified numbers—up to 2,000 recent entries directly within the Phone app recents list.
A Shift in Operations Pre-iOS 18
Previously reliant on a locally-stored dictionary with limited phone number details due to system constraints before iOS 18 release—as opposed o Android’s longstanding functionality—this new update effectively eliminates that gap across platforms. Moving forward, Truecaller is aiming at implementing support features that will allow images related to callers being displayed as well for its Apple user base.
Subscription Plans Available for Users
The premium subscription tier offered by Truecaller starts at $9.99 per month or $74.99 annually for individual users on iOS devices. There’s also a family plan available starting at $14.99 monthly or $99 yearly along with the top-tier Gold subscription priced at $249 annually.
