Farewell, “America’s Flagship”; Pandemic grants for artists; Researchers protest Trump orders

The passenger ship, which retired from service in 1996 and set up residence on the Delaware River waterfront as a decaying curiosity, began its long trip to Florida’s Gulf Coast and an eventual date as the largest artificial reef in the world.

Today, though, fans — including a former passenger who spoke to what it was like to cross the Atlantic on the fastest passenger ship ever (hint: don’t go outside!) — and the curious stood along the river and bid “America’s Flagship” farewell. Check out the reporting, photos and even a video!

Grant money from the Biden Administration’s response to the pandemic continues to be dispersed in 2025, and applications are being accepted by the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance over the next month. The grants are for $3,000 each. Continue reading …

Each month, dive into topics around healing, accountability, and transformation, featuring insightful speakers, local advocates, and individuals with lived experience. Free. (6 to 10 p.m.)

🎲 Thursday, Feb. 20: Game Night: Environmental Board Games at the Academy of Natural Sciences
Play exciting, nature-based games. Trek gorgeously illustrated trails, engage with wildlife, compete to be the night’s most-skilled nature observer, or build a habitable world. Beginners welcome! $15 tickets includes snacks and water. (6:30 to 9:30 p.m.)

📖 Thursday, Feb. 20: Reading and conversation about “Mother Archive: A Dominican Family Memoir”
The debut image-text memoir by writer and photographer Erika Morillo. Erika will be in conversation at The Head & The Hand with Philly-based artist and writer Irit Reinheimer and discuss the use of photography to understand mothering, memory, and identity in the context of the Dominican-American immigrant experience. (7 p.m.)

Dock Street Brewery on Washington Avenue hosts this weekly event with John of Philly Quizzo. Eat, drink, “know your sh*t” and win prizes. Pay-as-you-go. (7 to 9 p.m.)

🍝 Saturday, Feb. 22: Flavors of Carnevale: A Celebration of Italian Culture and Success
Italy’s famous festival of joy, color, and celebration comes to Aroma on 3rd with masks, mingling, and surprises. $45 tickets include a three-course meal, BYOB. (12:30 to 3 p.m.)

☕ Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 22-23: Winter Fest at Frankford Hall
