The Mayor of London has declared a £1 million investment aimed at sports initiatives throughout the school holidays, as part of an effort to steer youth away from violence.
Sir Sadiq Khan’s funding, set to commence this Easter, will benefit nearly 2,000 young Londoners through up to 20 community-driven projects, collaborating closely with his Violence Reduction Unit (VRU).
This initiative follows a similar effort from the previous year, prompted by findings from the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime which identified that incidents of violence among young people typically surge during the summer months.
Last week, the Metropolitan Police announced projected budget cuts, which will result in the loss of 1,700 positions, including police officers and staff allocated to schools.
As reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS), the mayor emphasized that focusing on prevention and providing constructive opportunities would yield better results than merely relying on arrests to address the issue.
In 2022, the mayor had already revealed a £2 million funding plan intended to engage thousands of young people in activities designed to mitigate the risk of violence during the summer break.
The Mayor’s office has indicated that this latest funding would also establish internships for young individuals at prominent sports organizations, including the Lawn Tennis Association, GB Snowsport, and Formula E.
