Caitlin Clark scored more in 2024 than Iowa football the last four seasons

Caitlin Clark will go down in history as being the highest-scoring player in college basketball history, men’s or women’s, finishing with 3,951 career points. And the Iowa Hawkeyes star set another record when she scored 1,204 points this season alone.

Not only did Clark set a record in her own sport, but over just the last year, she put more points on the board than her alma mater’s entire football program has — in the last four seasons.

That’s right: Clark’s 1,294 points scored over this past season alone are more than the Iowa football team scored since 2020, also the span of Clark’s entire basketball career.

On the football field, Iowa scored 1,028 points over the last four seasons, 176 fewer points than what Clark scored in this season alone.

Iowa’s two programs have built vastly different identities in that time: the Hawkeyes’ women’s basketball team is known for its quick pace, leading the nation with 91 points per game.

Last season, meanwhile, Iowa ranked dead-last in college football with 235.4 total yards per game and was second-to-last nationally by scoring 15.4 points on average each time out.

The Hawkeyes were 8th from the bottom with 216 total points scored throughout the season.

The year before, Iowa scored 230 points, compared to 328 in the 2021 season, and the Hawkeye put up 254 points total during the 2020 campaign, all ranked well in the bottom third nationally.

Now, as Clark leaves Iowa, so too does Hawkeyes offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz, replaced by new play-caller Tim Lester, who hopes to take the offense in a new direction this season.
