Outbreak of Dengue Fever Hits Massachusetts
Reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reveal that Massachusetts has seen an alarming 50 cases of dengue fever this year, with Worcester County accounting for a portion of these cases.
Unlike its typical presence in tropical climates like the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, the United States is now facing an increased risk of the disease. Surprisingly, this year has already seen more than double the number of cases compared to the previous year.
Dengue fever, a virus transmitted through mosquito bites, manifests in symptoms such as fevers, rashes, and body aches, and in extreme cases, fatality. Ford’s Hometown Services, a pest control company in Worcester, emphasizes the importance of eliminating mosquito breeding grounds, even as small as a bottle cap of stagnant water.
Lucas Ford of Ford’s Hometown Services explains, “Mosquito breeding accelerates with rising temperatures. Eggs may hatch within a day or two, especially during hot spells like those experienced in June and April. This rapid breeding cycle boosts mosquito populations significantly.”
To prevent dengue fever, it is advised to remove any standing water in your surroundings, use insect repellent, and wear long sleeves as protective measures. Additionally, the CDC urges individuals experiencing dengue fever symptoms to seek medical attention promptly and consider testing if they have recently visited high-risk locations.
