NOBODY could touch Stephen Hendry as he held the snooker world in his thrall seven times in a row during the 1990s.

He’s hit a grand total of 777 century breaks during his time competing at the sharp end of the sport.

He didn’t get off to the ideal start

But he’s freely admitted he doesn’t have the same commitment to practice as he did in his heyday.

Hendry, now 55, was one of snooker’s biggest stars for the best part of four decades.

He burst onto the scene as a 16-year old in 1985 and won the first of his seven world championships just five years later.

He retired in 2012 before making a comeback in 2020 and only retired for the second and seemingly final time earlier this year.

18 Triple Crown tournament wins

36 ranking titles

He said his “body is not performing like my brain wants it too” but also conceded he had too much going on away from the professional game to “do myself justice”.

But the humble star has been prepared to give him a snapshot of where he is right now – by challenging himself to see how many attempts it takes for him to record a century break.

And the bad news is that it takes him three attempts before he pots a single BALL.

“That was actually a pretty good safety shot, I’m not sure this red even goes!

“That was No 1 attempt – you’ve got to be able to pot a red!

“And that was take two, I’ve not potted a ball yet!”

Stephen Hendry reveals ongoing snub from fellow snooker legend Jimmy White

Speaking on his latest episode of Cue Tips, he said: “It’s a simple challenge.

“Well, maybe not as simple for me as I don’t play so much now.

“But I’m going to to see how many times it takes me to make a century break.

“I’ve been in China for a month so I’m a little bit rusty with the snooker cue, I’ve been playing a lot of Chinese pool!”

Hendry duly warms up, though, hitting 51 in his SIXTH attempt before missing a tough red into the middle which would have opened up the century.

A maximum break of 147 is even on for a while on his eighth attempt before he he has to give up on the black and come up the table for a colour.

And he records a break of exactly 100 in that attempt, showing exactly how difficult it is to achieve.

And fans loved the insight he gave them into the sport.

One write: “Really appreciate the integrity of Mr. Hendry showing the audience the challenge involved for a Century. Excellent episode.”

“So humble, no editing, no bs, he’s a proven legend and giving back and confidence to ‘30’ max breakers like me.

“Shows how sharp he was in his prime and how much practice and dedication he must have put in.

“I love the fact that he’s just here for the century, but the moment he gets a whiff of a 147, there’s no way he’s not going for it!”
