Barcelona have been trying to fill the void left by Sergio Busquets’ exits for two summers without success.
Oriol Romeu’s acquisition last year did not pan out as expected, with the veteran Spaniard already returning to Girona this summer on a loan deal.
This past summer window saw no reinforcements arrive due to Financial Fair Play constraints and the emergence of promising La Masia talents Marc Bernal and Marc Casado.
As such, having not reinforced the pivot midfield position this summer, Barcelona are likely to return to the market in the future transfer windows to address that.
Jerdy Schouten on the radars
According to MARCA, Barcelona have set their sights on PSV Eindhoven and Netherlands defensive midfielder, Jerdy Schouten, as a potential target.

As such, Schouten has emerged as a possible option following his impressive performances for club and country.
The 27-year-old has a market value of around €25 million as per the report but has a contract with PSV that runs until 2028.
As per MARCA, Barcelona’s interest in Schouten is not entirely new. Indeed, initial contacts were made between him and the club this past summer, but Financial Fair Play issues prevented any concrete moves.
Barcelona will continue to closely monitor Casado’s performances, hoping that he can make the position his own while awaiting Bernal’s return from injury, which will only be next season.
But there is now a possibility that the Catalans could revisit their interest in Schouten in the future. Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich also remains an option.
