Despite some questioning our £38m move for the winger over the past 12 months, Harvey Barnes is proving to be a very productive signing so far – and the stats back it up.
He may not be flashy, but he’s been the hero, to some extent, in each of our last three league games, setting up our equaliser at Bournemouth, scoring superbly in our 2-1 win over Spurs and curling into the top right corner at Wolves to complete our comeback yesterday.
Despite injuries derailing his first season and a lack of starts to help him find his flow, Barnes averages a goal contribution every 87 minutes for Newcastle United.
His two goals and one assist in 158 minutes of Premier League action this season equate to a goal contribution every 52.67 minutes this term, showing he’s currently our most potent and productive attacker and surely has to be given a run of starts.
He has 11 goal contributions (seven goals, four assists) in 25 league appearances for the club, yet only EIGHT of those have been starts.
With a lack of end product from our right side, shifting Gordon onto that flank and starting Barnes down his favoured left side could be the move Howe has to make moving forwards, ensuring our best three attackers are all on the pitch at the same time.
