PHOENIX – Vice President Kamala Harris is set to visit the border town of Douglas during her upcoming trip to Arizona, as announced by her campaign. The purpose of this visit is to discuss her immigration policy, which includes advocating for the bipartisan border security bill that was blocked by Senate Republicans earlier this year, according to a campaign aide familiar with the plans.
Douglas is located on the U.S.-Mexico border in Cochise County and is approximately 120 miles southeast of Tucson. Harris has attributed the failure of bipartisan legislation that aimed to increase border agents and technology for combating fentanyl trafficking to her Republican opponent, former President Donald Trump.
Democratic U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly from Arizona stated in an interview with MSNBC that he will be accompanying Harris during her visit to Douglas. He also placed blame on Trump for preventing the passage of the bipartisan border security bill.
Immigration remains a crucial issue for many voters in Arizona, which is considered a battleground state. According to August polling conducted by Phoenix-based Noble Predictive Insights, Trump holds a significant advantage over Harris on this topic; however, she has garnered support from officials in various Arizona border communities. Shortly after President Joe Biden withdrew from his re-election bid and handed over the baton to Harris, mayors of Bisbee, Nogales, Somerton and San Luis along with two members of the Yuma County Board of Supervisors endorsed her candidacy.
This will be Harris’ second visit to Arizona since becoming the Democratic nominee. As a battleground state, it has been frequently visited by candidates vying for presidency leading up to the Nov 5 general election.
