Spooky season is upon us—and while that could mean cuddling up on the couch with a hot pumpkin spice latte and binge-watching all your favorite horror classics, it could also mean checking yourself into a haunted hotel or visiting a notoriously spooky city.

If you’ve been considering taking a horror-fueled trip, you don’t actually have to venture too far from home. A new report spearheaded by Airbnb and shared with me over email has found tons of super spooky cities dotted all across the United States and Canada. Airbnb cross-referenced the number of listings that are self-described as spooky or haunted with the cities that have a deep-rooted spooky history or reputation for the paranormal.

If you’re a horror fiend, you’ll want to add the following destinations to your spooky season travel bucket list:

Salem, Massachusetts

Old Burying Point or the Charter Street Cemetery is the oldest cemetery in Salem, and the second oldest known cemetery in the country, started in 1637.

It should come as no real surprise that Salem ranks number one as the spookiest city in North America. The storied Massachusetts town was home to the 1692 witch trials and has maintained its reputation as a supernatural destination thanks to the abundance of allegedly haunted hotels and homes as well as the many museums, shops and restaurants that pay homage to its dark past.

Penetanguishene, Ontario

Penetanguishene up north in Ontario earns second place due to the notorious Beck House. The 19th-century home is known as one of the most active paranormal destinations in Canada and is regularly featured on ghost-hunting television shows. The best part? You can actually book a room and stay at this haunted establishment.

Seguin, Texas

The Haunted Magnolia Hotel in Seguin claims to be the most haunted hotel in all of Texas and is regularly featured on various paranormal television series. It’s said to be home for over a dozen different ghosts, including a little girl who was allegedly murdered in the hotel back in the late 1800s, shortly after it was built.

Savannah, Georgia

Savannah is another of the most spooky cities in North America—and it becomes easy to see why after booking one of the many ghost-walking tours available in the city. Savannah is the oldest city in Georgia and as such has a storied paranormal history that may or may not be accurate. If you’re not into following paranormal hearsay but still enjoy a spooky atmosphere, you’ll want to visit the city’s historic cemeteries—like the Colonial Park Cemetery, which dates back to 1750.

St. Augustine, Florida

Did you know that St. Augustine is the oldest continuously occupied city in the United States? The city dates back to 1565, which means plenty of time to conjure up its fair share of ghost stories. Travelers can find spooky history everywhere from military fortresses to lighthouses, prisons, historic inns and hospitals.

Other noteworthy spooky cities include St. Helens, Oregon, which is the original filming location for the well-loved Disney Channel franchise Halloweentown. Lancaster, Pennsylvania is another noteworthy city for horror fiends, as it’s one of the oldest inland cities in the country with a laundry list of locations that are believed to be haunted.
