A top weather expert has warned a massive Atlantic storm could ensure a weekend to forget in Ireland.

A huge storm, which formed in the Atlantic Ocean in the early hours of Thursday, is on its way to the outer reaches of western Europe. While Portugal is expected to take the brunt of the storm, it will have an impact on our weather this weekend.

Now, a top weather expert has warned that things could get considerably worse this weekend as the remnants of Storm Isaac are set to track east, nearing the south of Ireland.

Taking to social media to detail exactly what we can expect from the passing storm, Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather confirmed that Isaac will track east.

‘The National Hurricane Centre in America has named the next tropical storm Issac, which sits out in the Atlantic,’ he said. ‘It is forecast to track east.’

‘But some of that energy from Issac will be picked up by the jet stream and become the low pressure or storm system, which could track close to the south of the island on Sunday.’

What will the weekend look like?

Mr O’Reilly warned that the tropical storm could bring us extremely heavy rain on Sunday, September 29, particularly in southern regions, but explained that the strongest winds ‘do look likely’ to stay offshore.

Looking at Sunday’s forecast, Met Éireann has said that clouds will thicken early in the day, with heavy outbreaks of rain developing across the southwest from the get-go.

However, more persistent rain will move across the country from the west as southerly winds increase to ‘strong and gusty’ nationwide.

The forecaster confirmed it will also be cooler over the weekend, with temperatures reaching just 12 to 15C: ‘Winds will increase to very strong at times along the west coast later in the afternoon with some heavy falls of rain spreading throughout the country.’

Despite a promise of treacherous conditions on Sunday, the weather expert said that Storm Isaac looks more likely to move towards other parts of Europe in the coming days.

He said: ‘Isaac will track more towards Portugal, with the remnants likely to head towards Portugal, but the wind field does look like it’s going to stay well away from Ireland.’

Thankfully, Saturday won’t be as bad. Between the showers, spells of sunshine are forecast for the whole country.

Met Éireann said: ‘Tomorrow will be mostly dry with scattered cloud and good sunny spells at times. A few showers will develop in places. Light to moderate westerly winds will fall light later in the day and back southerly, with highest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees.’

Storm Helene makes landfall in Florida —

The weather expert also had another warning, adding that another ‘very serious’ hurricane, named Helene, has hit Florida on the country’s southeast coast, with one fatality already confirmed.

‘Unfortunately, a storm surge of up to 20 feet is possible. So if you have any family in Florida, make sure they’re well aware.’

The Storm has been upgraded to category four, posing a risk of catastrophic damage. Preparations to protect property and life are being rushed to completion.

Several counties in Florida are under evacuation orders, while a state of emergency has been declared in 61 of 67 counties.
