A Champion for Disabled Sports: Bryan Stevens’ Inspiring Journey

This national accolade, bestowed at the Scottish Disability Sport Awards, recognizes outstanding individuals who have significantly influenced the world of sports for disabled persons. To date, only 100 such awards have been conferred across Scotland.
A Dedication to Coaching and Inclusion
At just 38 years old, Stevens’ commitment to fostering sporting opportunities for individuals with disabilities has been transformative. His notable efforts in promoting wheelchair basketball are particularly commendable, but his extensive coaching repertoire spans numerous sports over a career that has thrived for nearly twenty years. Despite his many accomplishments, receiving this award came as a surprise to him.
“The acknowledgment was unexpected,” remarked Stevens. “I engage in coaching purely out of passion and not for acclaim. Until I attended the ceremony, I hadn’t grasped how significant this award is; it truly took me off guard.” He adds that while he cherishes this honor greatly, nothing compares to the satisfaction he derives from enabling disabled athletes in Inverness to participate in sports—something he found challenging himself growing up.
From Humble Beginnings to Established Impact
Stevens began his journey into coaching at age 18 while studying at National Star College in Cheltenham and playing basketball with Bristol Pirates. Upon returning to Inverness, he applied his skills across various sports disciplines including race running bikes.
Pioneering initiatives like founding the Inverness Lions Wheelchair Basketball Club showcases or commitment and results-driven mindset: under his guidance this season alone—the club achieved an impressive third place finish within the Scottish Development League.
Looking Ahead: Goals and Aspirations
The aspirations of the team remain lofty; “We are aiming for another top-three finish next season—and hopefully reaching the finals,” noted Stevens enthusiastically. He also extended an invitation: “We’re actively recruiting new players who are eager to join us next season; everyone is welcome.”
