Cambridge Rugby Club have announced that head coach Richie Williams will vacate his position at the end of the year.

Williams arrived at Ellgia Fields in 2018 to replace Ross Stewart and two years later he also took on the director of rugby role.

Under the Welshman’s guidance, Cambridge transformed from a side struggling to retain its National League One status to a team that is now plying its trade in the RFU Championship for the first time in the club’s history.

Life in the second tier has been tough so far, but Williams will leave the club in a much better place to the one he inherited when he departs after the away game at Bedford Blues on 28 December.

Chairman Tim Hague said: “On behalf of the club, I would like to thank Richie for his hard work, dedication and commitment to Cambridge Rugby during his time here, which has included some of the best moments of success within the club’s history. We wish him the very best of luck in the future.”

Former England international Anthony Allen will take on the role of interim head coach, with support being provided by forwards coach Neil Harris while the club considers the next course of action.

Meanwhile, Williams will take charge of Cambridge for the final time at home tomorrow (21 December) when they play host Ampthill.
